Jeggings
A fabulous friend just returned from London, England with a style report for me: “Jeggings everywhere!” The 1980′s strike again.
Dark, light, grey, acid wash, ripped…they’re not leggings, they’re not jeans, they’re jeggings. Yes, another crazy word created by fashion writers to express two words (jean leggings) as one (jeggings). Interestingly enough, the word ‘jeggings’ is currently waiting to receive entry in the English Oxford Dictionary.
Fashion writers are torn with what to do with these: they’re comfortable like leggings but are jeggings as flattering as jeans? Celebrities, of course, are wearing them, but true fashionistas (those who style themselves without paid help) are still not committing to the look 100%. New York Magazine had a field day poking fun at these and other “scary denims” back in early fall.
Jeggings can look great, if worn right. One of my most stylish friends rocked thick, black jeggings with suede OTK boots and a mid-length tunic on New Year’s Eve. She knew how to rock jeggings for her fabulous figure. On the other hand, hardly anything looks bad on her as she has one of those long, tall sip of water bodies that you die for and always looks gorgeous in the latest trends – I would despise her if I didn’t adore her so much!
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, jeggings are here to stay for at least another year. So if you can’t beat ‘em, I say join ‘em! Try jeggings for yourself but do shell out the extra cash for a quality pair like J Brand or Citizens of Humanity. Check out Style Tips 101 for tips on wearing jeggings.
Are you a jeggings do or a jeggings don't?
