A great wool coat is a must have in the winter months. There are three secrets to finding the perfect coat: length, fabric and style.

If you’re building your fashion wardrobe, you’ll want to start with a classic, wool-cashmere, knee-length coat. A classic, simple style will last you for years to come. Look for a coat with basic buttons; perhaps start your search for single-breasted coats. Double-breasted coats are better in a pea coat style, which is also a classic, but more of a jacket rather than a coat.

Purchase a wool coat for significant savings in the springtime.

Personally, I invested in a black, French Connection wool coat a few years ago. I purchased it in the springtime for 70% off and it is still my go to when I don’t know which coat to wear. This is one of my biggest money-saving tips: you can purchase a wool coat for significant savings in March/April and put it away until next year.

Be wary of $60 winter coats at popular chain stores. A cheap, winter coat will look flimsy when you wear it, won’t keep you warm and, worst of all, will probably pill like crazy and you’ll have to replace it next season anyway. If you need a coat now but can’t afford a $400 price tag, the cheaper coats might be a good option until you can hit the springtime sales rack.

Once you have the basics covered, you can move onto more funky designs. Soia & Kyo, the coats pictured above, are ultra warm and ultra stylish winter coats. The large buttons make them super cute, while the wool-cashmere blend ensures they’ll last for years to come.
